When assessing the needs of Chelsea Jose usually gets the balance right. For all the attacking flair required to win tings the Chelsea boss knows that he needs solid defenders and great legs in the midfield department.
John Obi Mikel has been a decent servant for the club but has been on the wane for years and latest reports suggest that Chelsea will make a move for a fantastic athlete in his prime. The Express reckons:
CHELSEA are considering a move for Zenit St Petersburg’s £24million Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel.
Mourinho has identified the defensive midfielder as one of the men he wants to improve his options, with long-serving John Obi Mikel looking likely to leave Stamford Bridge amid interest from Turkey and the Middle East.
He’s very much a Chelsea type in that he’s technically excellent and has football intelligence. But this is all underpinned by inordinate levels of athleticism. Witsel will run through walls for his team, keep things moving and always provide the necessary leg work in front of the defence.
Although he may be brought in, initially, as a squad member this guy is too good to leave on the bench for long. At 26 he has played 57 times for a golden generation Belgium side (6 goals) and, for our money, would be playing alongside Matic in front of the back five every week before too long.
If Oscar moves on then perhaps Cesc Fabregas would be deployed behind the number 9 next season with Matic and Witsel providing the most solid of platforms from which to build.
Let’s take a look the the man in his pomp. Chelsea fans: would this be a canny investment or are you well covered in the defensive midfield with Matic, Ramires and even the blossoming Kurt Zouma?

Comment: John Mikel Obi has really served Chelsea fc well and I would advice he moves to Fernabache than go to Dubai. Jose Mourinho is human and he’s bound to make mistakes. Salah could be at his prime now but is he really a BIG TEAM PLAYER? I don’t think so. Kevin De Bruyne was the only mistake Jose Mourinho made in the transfer market.
