With Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane finally confirming his club’s interest in the signing of Paul Pogba, we believe that there is a very good chance that he will be playing in white next season.
Because, annoyingly for the rest, Real Madrid usually get the players that they go after. To this end we may well see David de Gea and Paul Pogba become the latest players to succumb to their charms this summer after a trophyless season for the Spaniards.
But where would Pogba fit into the side? For our money, there are three alternatives.
Firstly, Real Madrid could make a simple swap with Pogba and Modric. Modric has been a wonderful player for Real Madrid but was injured for much of last season and, at 29, Real may be looking for more power.
Or Real Madrid could hook Benzema, place Ronaldo up top, Rodriguez out wide, and play Pogba in a more advanced role where he can concentrate on creating and scoring goals, without the burden of defending.
Another, more drastic option, would be to change the system. Real Madrid have played a 4-2-3-1 for a while but the new manager Rafa Benitez may feel that, to get more out of his team, he may revert to a 4-3-3 with Rodriguez missing out and Pogba in the most advanced role of a delicious looking midfield three.
Whichever way they go the signing of Pogba would give Real Madrid real options in that midfield and Pogba’s versatility would afford Los Blancos more ways of playing.
Real Madrid fans: are these teams better than the current XIs?
