We have been persistent advocates for Arsene Wenger to sign another striker this summer.
Danny Welbeck is a hard working and adaptable player but we knew he wouldn’t make the difference when he signed for Arsenal.
And although the current reported target, Jackson Martinez, is much more of a natural finisher than Welbeck, we would still question whether he is the right man for the job.
Arsenal don’t lack goals. They have plenty of them in the team and share them around in a healthy fashion.
The problem is scoring against the big boys. Arsenal are regularly found wanting when it comes to the crunch games against top defences.
And, although Martinez is a prolific goalscorer – he’s scored 92 in 132 for Porto – he hasn’t yet proven himself at the very top level.
10 in 36 for Colombia is decent but perhaps a more precise representation of where he’s at. It’s still a decent record but, at 28, will Martinez make a difference for Arsenal against the big boys or just end up scoring the fourth goal against the likes of Sunderland with the match already won?
The Mirror says that Arsenal are preparing a move for the lad and he could well turn out to be a Sanchez-esque signing – a superstar in England. But wouldn’t it be better to go for a more seasoned and well travelled performer like Gonzalo Higuain?
At 27, the Argentine hasn’t played in England either but he has proven himself Italy and Spain, as well as scoring 23 in 47 for Argentina at the very top level.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may feel that he has some breathing space from the doubters after another FA Cup win. But we would argue that this summer is absolutely crucial for him. He must sign the right players if he wants to be remembered as a true Arsenal great.
Arsenal fans: Higuain or Martinez?
