Arsenal taking the cheap option in the transfer market again?

Good but no cigar

The Telegraph continues, today, to pedal the story about Arsenal’s interest in Grzegorz Krychowiak, The 25 year old Sevilla midfielder who has impressed in La Liga over the last year.

Arsenal definitely need more substance in that area of the park and The Pole is energetic as well as technically adroit.

But is he really going to noticeably improve Arsenal or does it represent another example of Arsene Wenger skimping on the more defensive areas of the squad?

The Pole has played 24 times for his country since his debut in 2008. So he’s not been what you would call a nailed on starter thoughout his term as a full international. He scored two goals in 36 appearances at club level last season and reportedly has a release clause of 30m Euros, although Southampton are said to have made a bid as low as £12m for the star in the last week or so. So his final cost may well be a lot lower than the price paid for Morgan Schneiderlin.

And we can’t help thinking that Arsenal would be missing a huge trick if they didn’t instead sign the Frenchman. The Gunners have never properly replaced Patrick Vieira and The Saints star would surely get closer to finally taking the Vieira baton than Krychowiak.

Schneiderlin has great Premier League experience and hit 5 goals in 29 appearances in the last campaign. Goals aren’t the most important part of a midfield general’s job but the best ones still chip in and, for our money, Schneiderlin would represent a far better signing in general.

Wenger isn’t known for spending big money on defensive types and that may well continue in the summer. But losing out on Schneiderlin could once more limit Arsenal’s potential to win titles next season.
