As the transfer rumour mill really starts kicking in, The Telegraph states that Manchester United are monitoring the situation with Christian Benteke and that they could rival Liverpool for his signature this summer.

While we still can’t work out exactly how Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal would deploy an extra forward next season, there is a growing swell of rumour that Manchester United will target another centre forward this summer – Karim Benzema’s name has also been mentioned of late.

At 24 Benteke is back to his best, after long term injury, and he would provide a compelling addition to the Manchester United squad. Rather like Didier Drogba in some ways, Benteke is a powerful man but one with the most elegant of touches at times. He’s hit 15 goals in 32 games for a struggling Aston Villa side this season and he looks likely to leave the club this summer, with so much reported interest in him.

But the big question remains, how would Manchester United use the lad? We have assumed that Wayne Rooney will be the main number 9 for Manchester United next season. But, in a 4-3-3 there is only room for one striker.

So perhaps Louis intends to go for a 4-2-3-1 or his less favoured 4-4-2 next season and increase the firepower of the team. Either that or Wazza will be asked to play in midfeld again.

FINAL WORD: Few teams would wave away the power and precision that Benteke offers and, at 24, he could be about to make the league by storm.

Let’s see the lad in action. Manchester United fans: keen?
