Arsenal fans’ ears will prick up at the news that Morgan Schneiderlin has all but confirmed that he is about to leave Southampton.
With several big suitors reportedly interested in signing the player, it’s not completely clear whether Arsenal are the front runners for his signature, but he has said that he will stay in The Premier League:
“Yes, I think my decision is made,”
“I learned a lot last season. The goal is to stay in England. It is a championship that I like and where I have a lot of fun. If I leave Southampton, it is for a club that plays better than the Europa League.
“There are ongoing discussions but nothing is done. But of course the Champions League is my goal. If I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.
“I have a two-year contract. If a club pays the right amount for me, it will be time to leave.
“The amount? I have no idea but I will not leave for a small price. Southampton is known to be a good seller club, the price should be high enough.”
Schneiderlin has been one of the best midfielders in the league for the last two seasons and interest in him is at an all time high. Tottenham made a bid last summer and surely retain an interest. But they can’t offer Champions League football like Arsenal so, unless Manchester United or Chelsea come in for the lad then he seems destined for The Gunners.
At 25 he’s coming into his peak and, for our money, he’s exactly the player that the club has been crying out for for the last 5 years or more – a disciplined anchor man who can break up attacks and has the distributional skills to get Arsenal on the front foot. It’s a no-brainer and Arsenal won’t sign a better player this summer.
But we have a feeling that Manchester United may fancy him too.
Let’s see the lad in a action. Arsenal fans: keen?
