Manchester United: Down payment already made for powerful Frenchman – report

Smalling and Jones - The future of United's defence?

Promise

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is as meticulous as they come and his scouts are always on the look out for young talent. Latest reports in French news outlet L’Equipe suggest that Manchester United have already made a down payment of 450,000 Euros for a talented defender of just 17.

Dayot UPAMECANO Valenciennes central defender. His name has animated the headline transfers this winter. Manchester United had even deposited € 450 000 on the VA office

At just 17 this guy isn’t expected by many to be the immediate answer for Manchester United in the heart of defence. But there is a growing sense that Louis van Gaal will entrust his current roster of defenders with taking responsibility for the next few years. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are developing well – Smalling was recently given the captain’s armband for the game against Arsenal – and Marcos Rojo looks like a really good player in the making.

So, while stories continue to swirl about Manchester United signing a centre back for big money this summer, we think that it makes more sense for them to invest in youth. At 17, Upamecano is said to be a really powerful lad and one with decent feet.

It remains to be seen how soon the lad will be coming to the club but L’Equipe is a highly regarded source with the inside track on many a French player. So we shall keep our ears to the ground on this one.
