With the unconfirmed reports that Mats Hummels has decided against a move to England with Manchester United this summer, The Daily Mail has wasted little time in suggesting an alternative. They say:
Manchester United revive interest in £36m-rated (€50.7m) Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi
While some South Americans struggle in The Premier League, Argentine defenders tend to do pretty well on theses shores. Pablo Zabaleta and Gabriel Heinze both enjoyed the physical battles in this league and we think that Marcos Rojo will prove to be an excellent signing for Manchester United. So why bother spending so much on a player who is older than Rojo and not getting in the Argentina squad as regularly?
At 27 he’s a solid and quickish centre back who is hard-nosed and no nonsense in his approach. But Manchester United would be far better off nurturing the talents of Rojo, who can become an excellent centre back, and allowing Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to blossom.
We have said it before, Manchester United would be better off buying a young player like Aymeric Laporte. There is talk of United needing more experience in the centre of defence but Smalling and Jones are starting to look seasoned and Rojo is also now in his mid-twenties. These guys all have solid futures at the club and bringing in a player who expects to start could cause much disharmony in the camp.
Let’s take a look at Otamendi. Manchester United fans: Is he worth all that money or should United concentrate on other areas?
