We were reminded of those unbelievable statistics during The Champions League quarter final between Real Madrid and Atletico on Wednesday evening.
After scoring so many goals for so long, we have perhaps become a bit complacent with the feats of ex-Manchester United man Cristiano Ronaldo.
But, until Messi and Ronaldo came along, those sort of figures where the sort you would only see when flicking through a footie book about the great teams of the 1920s when there were huge mismatches between certain teams and players.
To score this many goals in the modern game, where the level of professionalism and athleticism is so high, is even more hard to conceive. Some would say that Spain is a league with a few good teams and lots of minnows. It’s true that La Liga may not be as competitive as The Premier League – but, in his penultimate season at Manchester United, he scored 42 in 49 games.
Any way you look at it, Ronaldo is a football god.
So can Manchester United bring him back to the the club this summer? If he won The Champions League again at Real Madrid, perhaps he would see it as the right time for a change? Some would argue that the deal wouldn’t make financial sense, with Ronaldo turning 31 next February.
But he’s a monster of an athlete and a player this good may not reappear for another 40 years. So if there is any chance of Manchester United bringing him back they should grab it with both hands.
Manchester United are one of the only clubs in the world who could afford him (certainly the only club that he would play for in England) and while he’s still playing at the top level there remains a small chance that the prodigal will return to Old Trafford.
Manchester United fans: can you see it happening?
