Glory Glory?

6 months ago, heck even less than that, many were pondering whether Manchester United were falling into the football abyss. With their identity seemingly disappearing from the performances, it looked like a long way back for a team who had been used to winning something every season.

Well they haven’t won a trophy for two years but Sky pundit Jamie Carragher thinks that Manchester United will be considered serious contenders for the league again next season.

Talksport quotes him as saying:

“People have more belief now in what he’s trying to do. Next season he will be bedded in, the football will come, he’ll have more players he wants and people will be more used to him.

“The fact it [the improved performances] has come before the end of the season is a real bonus for them. Looking at them now, people will start getting the idea they could go on and win the league next season.”

The desperate form of the first half of the season seems a distant memory now and it’s actually difficult to think of a time when Manchester United were in such good form. They totally overpowered Manchester City and we believe that Chelsea will struggle against them at the weekend. A win for Manchester United still probably won’t be enough for them to challenge for this season’s trophy.

But if they continue where they left off in August Manchester United are going to be difficult to stop. Indeed, the need for reinforcements has suddenly been put into perspective with a seriously strong squad already at Louis van Gaal’s disposal.

Do Manchester United really need to make wholesale changes this summer? We aren’t so sure any more. We would consider a right back and a wide forward player like Memphis Depay to be important additions. But the defence, and particularly the midfield, has shown such quality of late that the idea of adding expensive imports may actually be disruptive to this excellent group.
