Tottenham have rarely been a team that has problems going forward. They have great attacking traditions and their roster of Premier League forwards compares well with that of any team in the league.

But they have too often been negligent when it comes to organising a proper back 5. We would argue that they would have seen a lot more Champions League football had they signed better quality defenders over the years.

At this point, Lloris and Vertonghen would get into many to most sides in The Premier League. There are other promising defensive players in the squad like Davies and Yedlin. Kyle Walker is dynamic but sometimes seems to lose his head.

But, if you added a really top centre back to that mix, everything could quickly fall into place. What about a regular in the Germany side?

The Mirror reports today that Tottenham are keen on the excellent Benedikt Höwedes:

Schalke’s Benedikt Howedes on Tottenham radar as Mauricio Pochettino bids to strengthen defence

His name has been mentioned in relation to a lot of clubs and it seems that he may be open to a move. Tottenham would have to move decisively if they wanted him because, at 27, he’s in his pomp.

32 caps for Germany and 275 games for Schalke, Höwedes has been the captain of his club since 2011. It would be a wrench for him to leave but you do feel that it’s now or never for a really big transfer.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Tottenham fans: it his the perfect solution to a slightly porous defence?
