Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has stoked the fires of speculation linking Mats Hummels with a move to Manchester United this summer by stating that the Borussia Dortmund defender is at the right age for the rigours of The Premier League. In and interview with German news outlet Bild, the man capped 103 times by West Germany said:
‘At 26, Hummels is at the best age to make the move to England,’
‘I can understand his thinking well.’
This one is going to rumble on slowly until the end of the season but, while there will surely be interest from elsewhere in such a talented and accomplished pro, Manchester United do seem well placed to sign the lad. They are clearly prepared to send big to plug the hole in the the centre of their defence and there appear to be few better suited players out there than Hummels.
He’s not only a fine physical specimen who can hold his own in England but he is also a great distributor of the ball out of defence.
If Manchester United don’t win the battle for his signature they may go in for the exciting youngster Aymeric Laporte. But, one would imagine that Louis van Gaal will be looking for more experience than he currently possesses in his back line.
