Martin Samuel attempts to avoid hype and hyperbole wherever possible. This is part of what makes him a great sports writer and why he has so many accolades.

In his latest piece he states the belief that, while a transfer is by no means guaranteed, if Manchester United do sign one particular player this summer then they will be champions again by next May. Samuel says:

Gareth Bale would win Manchester United the title so it’s worth sacrificing David de Gea to sign him from Real Madrid

It’s a convincing argument and one which we are inclined to agree with. Not only would Bale bring the sort of stardust that Manchester United need in order to properly compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City over the course of a whole season. But Manchester United need another winger possibly more than any other player.

There has been a lot of talk of striker and midfield signings in the summer. But Manchester United already have a deep squad full of quality. What they lack is consistent service from the wide areas and a player to get behind defences on a regular basis. They have a great finisher in Wayne Rooney and excellent midfielders with the likes of Mata, Herrera and Carrick.

But Bale would bring the kind of pace and speed of play that the attack still needs if it is going to return to the top table of domestic and European football.

It should be an intriguing summer in the transfer market and Bale would surely be the first choice of most at Old Trafford.

Manchester United fans: should the club pull out all the stops for Bale?

This guy is mad, De Gea over Bale all day. I think we have more chance on winning the title if we get Hummels, Khedira, Depay and Firmino, while keeping De gea. Those 4 players would be far cheaper then overhyped Bale.
