Tottenham: Martin Keown is off his chops about Harry Kane

Too much pressure

We have to say that, despite initial reservations about ex-Gooner Martin Keown as a TV commentator, we now find him to be one of the most entertaining and original pundits out there.

His turn of phrase can be highly amusing in a time when too much political correctness regularly curtails interesting and unrestrained lyricism on the telly.

But, in The Daily Mail on Thursday he made a potentially dangerous comment. When asked about the development of Tottenham god Harry Kane, he said:

They intelligently looked for each other, and the link play was good – that’s not something you see when Rooney plays with Welbeck or Sturridge. Kane is technically good and links so well so in a way I’m struggling to work out why it’s taken him this long to reach this level!

Why it has taken him so long? You’re off your chops aren’t you mate? He’s 21 and already playing for England! We always talk about how the English media and fans alike put too much pressure on the shoulders of young players, which can be to their long term detriment.

It may well have been a bit of a tongue in cheek comment. But when an ex-pro jumps on the bandwagon of over hyping youngsters, we should be concerned.

Because, not long out of his teens, Harry Kane is still way ahead of schedule. And what’s more, he is now man enough to deal with the physical demands of playing at the top level with Tottenham and England on a consistent basis.

Had he been over burdened at a younger age, Kane might be spent by 25 – ravaged by media pressure and too many minutes on the park.

Harry Kane can be a national jewel. But there is an awful long way to go. At this point he’s had one good season. But so did David Bentley.

For the record, Keown himself didn’t play for England until he was 25. So, Martin, what took you so long mate?
