So can anyone see Manchester United spending £43m on Radamel Falcao now? At the start of the season, and despite the injury problems, most United fans were desperate for Falcao to make his deal permanent – he was surely going to be a huge success.
But the look of consternation that he gave to the bench when he was hooked after an hour against Preston in the cup on Monday night spoke volumes. (Picture courtesy of The Independent).
With a maximum of 16 games left for Manchester United this season Falcao’s chances of proving himself to Louis van Gaal are dwindling. And, while he is now back to full fitness, he seems to be playing within himself – almost resigned to the fact that he will be moving again come May.
And his form has not been good enough. He works really hard and has a lovely instinct for where to be. But his touch has let him down time and again. Perhaps this will return with time but the pace of The Premier League may also be causing him problems.
It’s a desperately sad end to a Manchester United career which promised so much – namely, countless spectacular and match-winning goals. Falcao and Manchester United seemed to be a match made in heaven in August – a perfect marriage of two returning giants of the game.
But, for reasons of fitness, form, tactics and plain bad luck, it hasn’t worked out for the Colombian. And, on this evidence, you would imagine that United will be spending their money elsewhere in the summer.
Manchester United fans: is it now game over for Sad Rad?
