A Variety of Bad News for Chelsea

Chelsea won through a bruising encounter against Liverpool for a place in The Capital One Cup final – but it doesn’t appear to have been without casualties.

The Express reports on Wednesday that Diego Costa will face retrospective action for his alleged stamp during the match. This one has been resolved quickly and it appears that Costa has been charged by the FA for the incident.

And, more immediately, Chelsea could have selection problems as three players were reportedly hurt during the game.

The Express says:

Goalscorer Ivanovic suffered a cut foot and Filipe Luis (calf) and Cesc Fabregas (hamstring) were substituted, making them doubts for the clash with City.

Cesar Azpilicueta will be expected to come in for Filipe Luis at the weekend anyway. But the potential absences of Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas, for the game against Manchester City at the weekend, could be crucial.

Fabregas joined Chelsea in the summer immediately looked as if he’d been there for years. He is as important as any player in the current team.

And Ivanovic has, quite simply, been a rock for the club.

Neither injury looks serious but, with the title clash just a few days away, it’s an untimely blow for the club.
