Whoever Manchester United attempt to sign in the remaining days of the January transfer window, a recent injury to Roma star Kevin Strootman means that he certainly won’t be on the list of arrivals.
Manchester United are undertaking a wide ranging search for potential targets around the world of football and Strootman has been persistently linked with a move to the club over the last year.
But the player suffered damage to his knee during Roma’s 1-1 draw with Fiorentina at the weekend and was withdrawn from the match after 34 minutes.
Concerns about another long-term injury were allayed after the game when Roma boss Rudi Garcia said:
“The doctor has seen it and it seems that it isn’t a serious injury,”
“But with a knee we must always be careful.
“Let’s see what happens in the next few hours, he has already suffered so much with knee injuries.”
But with just a week left in the January transfer window it now seems completely out of the question that Manchester United would make a move for the player.
Strootman spent the best part of last season on the sidelines and has taken a long time to get his match sharpness back. He’s been back in the squad for the last couple of months but hasn’t yet got his rhythm back – he certainly isn’t yet the imperious presence that we regularly saw before the injury.
While this latest knock doesn’t sound too bad, the fact that it’s another problem with that knee will leave the players and his representatives with an anxious wait for test results.
Manchester United fans: worth the wait or should Louis now got or another midfield general?
