Real Madrid have been regularly and intensely linked with Manchester United’s brilliant keeper David de Gea over the last 18 months as the young Spaniard has been seen by some as the perfect long term solution between the sticks for the club.
But ex-Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon, who presided over the club between 2006-9 reckons that the don’t need him:
“We already have the best goalkeeper in the world, which is Casillas. We also have Keylor Navas. I don’t see any need to get any other goalkeeper.
“De Gea is perhaps also one of the best goalkeepers in the world but Casillas can still be at the top for three or four years. I don’t see any need [for De Gea].”
Talk about blind faith. We totally respect the fact that Casillas is one of the all time greats. But some of his performances for club and country over the last year have been literally awful.
We also wonder how regularly Calderon has seen De Gea play for Manchester United. This is, after all, the club’s player of the year at just 24 – a young man who has almost defied the laws of physics over the last year with some of his saves.
If you offered me any keeper in the world right now I would take De Gea. Sure, Neuer is a top keeper. But De Gea is more acrobatic, quick-witted and more exciting to watch. Rarely could you say that the goalkeeper is worth the entrance fee alone. But there have been several occasions this season when that has been true of De Gea – he’s unbelievable.
So, while Calderon clearly speaks what he thinks is the truth, we would love to interview him six months after De Gea signs for Real Madrid – we feel that his opinion would be quite different then.
Let’s see the cat in action. Real Madrid fans: do you think that De Gea is worth all the fuss?
