We really hope, for the sake of Manchester United fans everywhere, that this story has substance.
Because, say what you like about Manchester United’s performances yesterday. One thing we would surely all agree on is the defence needs work.
A priority has to be a no-nonsense, powerful and decisive centre back. And this guy would be a fantastic addition. The Express, among others, reports:

Laporte is a target for United boss Louis van Gaal as he looks to strengthen his defence in January.
We think that Laporte is a star int he making. His tender age – he’s just 20 – is immaterial. It doesn’t bother us one bit because he’s already built like a rock and will shore up that Manchester United defence no end.
We also applaud the idea of signing youngsters instead of the recent trend for bringing in older stars.
While there obviously needs to be a balance there, the best signings are always the long term projects who improve in front of your eyes every week.
We think that Laporte would be great signing and a step int he right direction for a struggling Manchester Unite defence.
