Exciting

Even the most ardent Chelsea fans, and the keenest football sensationalists, would be inclined to agree that there is little chance – in the short term at least – of the club signing God. AKA Lionel Messi.

But things aren’t going too well at Barcelona right now and Chelsea have been given some kind of encouragement that they might well be able to snare the player in future. Because Messi himself has stirred the cauldron of hype by saying that he doesn’t know where he will playing in future. Speaking at Fifa’s Ballon d’Or award ceremony he said:

“I am not sure If I will go back to Newells Old Boys one day. I am not sure where I will be next year,” Messi said. “I have always said I will end my career at Barcelona but as Cristiano said, only God knows the future. Things in football can change overnight.”

Is this is a mere threat to get Barcelona to give him more money or is he, as seems increasingly likely, starting to get a bit disenchanted with life at Barcelona?

Most great sports people like to test themselves, and their greatness, in different environments. Having played his entire senior career at Barcelona perhaps the challenge of Chelsea, or another English club, might actually be appealing to the 27 year old.

We would have to say that Barca aren’t the team of old and Chelsea are flying. It’s a long long way off. But the thought of Messi and Hazard either side of Diego Costa is making us dribble.

Chelsea, or any team who wants to win games for that matter, would want to sign him, The most salient question is, in times of enforced FIFA FairPlay ‘austerity’ can Chelsea afford the lad?

Let’s see him doing his best to make other players look like donkeys. Chelsea fans: pipe dream or possibility?
