PICTURE: A Manchester United XI vs Southampton with Herrera and Mata starting

Herrera

Anyone for Tiki Taka?

The two impish Spaniards haven’t started too many games together this season, but when they have the understanding has been good, as you might expect of the fellow countrymen.

Mata said of Herrera earlier this season:

“I think maybe we see the game in the same way,” Mata told ManUtd.com. “We are different players but we like to play the same way, which is to try to pass, to assist, to move and to find the gaps in the opposition defence. Ander is a great player and everyone who plays with him enjoys it.”

The difficulty is how to fit them into the same side and retain the balance and requisite skill set to win games. They are very similar players and one might argue, too similar, for the same side.

But Louis van Gaal wouldn’t have agreed to signing Herrera if he thought that they couldn’t platy together. And, now that they are both fit and firing, perhaps it’s time to role them both out at Old Trafford this weekend against Southampton.

Amazingly, with half a season gone, we still don’t know what LvG’s best side is. Manchester United have suffered so many injuries that the boss hasn’t been able to try all the combinations that he would have liked.

But he may try a new combination this weekend and perhaps even a new formation. A 4-2-3-1 with RvP rested might allow Mata and Herrera the rare chance to combine against an in form Saint said that Manchester United deafened 2-1 in the reverse fixture towards the end of last year.

So here is an XI with both of the pass masters starting in a 4-2-3-1.

This is the best information we can at this moment put in place a saints who are very good on the wings and in the middle of the park. I think a 3-5-2 will not work against the saints, we need a four back.
