Symmetry?

So let’s tell you where we are with the Kevin Strootman deal.

He was described as one of Louis van Gaal’s ‘untouchables‘ when he was Holland manager.

He said when he took over in the summer that he would monitor the player, who has been recovering from a long term knee injury.

One journalist, who wrote a book about Louis says that the player has already shaken hands on a deal to move to Manchester United.

And Strootman was, somewhat strangely, an unused substitute for Roma’s crunch game with Manchester City in the week, after being booed by his own fans over the last few weeks.

There are very few certainties in the world of football. But, fitness permitting, Strootman to Manchester United is close to being just that.

Assuming he does pass any fitness test he may well make a move to United in January. Roma are out of Europe after losing to City and they may decide to bring forward the inevitable as the player is really keen to join, according to reports.

But his signing would mean yet another left-footer in the starting eleven. Louis obviously felt that there were too many right-footed players in the side when he joined Manchester United. But is he starting to go too far the other way?

With the new addition, Manchester United could regularly field Rojo, Shaw, Blind, Mata, Di Maria, van Persie and Strootman in the same team. That’s 7 left footers starting.

Will it imbalance the side? You would have to say that it shouldn’t matter too much. Many teams have 7 right footers and we don’t talk about a lack of balance there.

But if Arjen Robben come into the side we could be close to a full team of lefties! It’s unusual if not problematic. Here’s how United might line up next year.
