Manchester City aren’t known for doing Manchester United favours, but they may well have done The Reds a big one on Wednesday evening.
Because, by beating Roma on a dramatic night of Champions League football, they have sent the Italians out of the competition. Cue explosion of rumour mills.
You can read what you like into Kevin Strootman being left on the bench for Roma’s crucial clash. He’s virtually back to full fitness now and you would imagine that a midfield powerhouse of his class would be the first name on the team sheet for such a tie.
But there have been murmurs of discontent from the fans of late as Strootman has failed to publicly deny that he’s keen on a switch to Manchester United and one Dutch journalist, who wrote a book about Louis van Gaal, reckons that player and coach have already shaken hands on a move to Old Trafford.
It seems then that the stage is set for a big winter move. The biggest question remains whether the player has fully recovered form his long term injury. But rigorous tests would obviously be done before any such major transaction.
Fitness permitting, it’s just matter of time before Strootman arrives at Manchester United. And Roma’s defeat on Wednesday could speed things up noticeably.
Let’s see the lad in action. Manchester United fans: a perfect addition?
