Manchester United have all sorts of selection issues right now. With a catalogue of injuries some choices have been forced upon them over the last few months.
But now Louis van Gaal is beginning to have the preferred problem of who to leave out – particularly up top, where he has four strikers coming to the boil.
Wayne Rooney plays deeper and his role is guaranteed. But James Wilson and Radamel Falcao are putting increasing pressure on the under-performing Robin van Persie as the season progresses.
RvP has four goals this season but he clearly isn’t at his best. Meanwhile James Wilson is getting hard to leave out and Falcao is in need of game time. But Southampton coach Ronald Koeman has no doubts about the Manchester United marksman.
“I think he’s one of the best strikers…
“He scored a great goal against Hull but you know if you are a player at the highest level and you are not scoring, or the team is not winning, then you will get criticised about that.
“He’s a great player and one of the best Dutch strikers that we have.”
We believe that the pace of James Wilson is the irresistible part of his game. Where Van Persie is still a great finisher, Wilson offers that dynamism off the mark that can be so useful away from home for Manchester United.
Of course RvP and Wilson could well start together as they did against Stoke. But with Falcao also returning to match fitness the Dutchman is going to have to put in some top performances to keep his place ion the starting line up.
