Manchester United: January signings possible says Broadsheet as United linked with superb defender

Falcao hasn't done enough this season

Exciting times

After just a year in the doldrums many rivals were hoping for a much longer period of demise. But Manchester United fans are already cautiously optimistic about a resurgence and we are witnessing exciting times at the club again.

How far Manchester United can go this season is anyone’s guess but they certainly aren’t wasting any time on the project and The Telegraph reckons that more major investment is possible if top United targets become available in January:

Signings in January are also possible – especially if United can land one of their central defensive targets such as Diego Godin.

Godin hasn’t been one of the most persistently linked names doing the rounds in the rumour mills as reports have more regularly linked Manchester United with a move for Godin’s team mate and central defensive partner, the Brazilian international Miranda.

But, with 85 caps for Uruguay, 28 year old Godin has great experience. He’s hardly missed a game in the last four years at Atletico Madrid and his weekly presence could make all the difference to a Manchester United defence which has talent but little continuity right now.

If Manchester United are successful in their pursuit of players like Godin and Hummels then something will surely have to give at the back. Defenders such as Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans will come under renewed pressure for their places. And with Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair coming up through the ranks, you would have thought that at least one of the current senior centre backs would be offloaded. There simply aren’t enough games for seven central defenders at Manchester United.

Let’s take a look at Godin. United fans: a decent bet?
