Early Doors

On the evidence of The World Cup the appointment of Louis van Gaal to Robin van Persie’s Manchester United looked like a match made in heaven.

The then Holland manager coaxed the best out of RvP in the summer and he looked razor sharp throughout the tournament in Brazil despite suffering a spate of injuries in the season prior. It was easy to imagine RvP spearheading the attack and going on to break his Manchester United scoring record in the coming campaign.

The first surprise was the signing of Radamel Falcao but that could easily be put down to a moment of opportunism.

RvP didn’t look comfortable in a 3-5-2 with Falcao up top. So when the Colombian got injured we thought he would relish the chance to lead the line alone.

But, for whatever reason, it hasn’t happened for him this season. He has scored just three goals and has been anonymous for large chunks of matches. He seems to have lost any real pace that he once had and there is talk of terminal decline at 31.

A report in The Telegraph states that Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini is interested in taking the striker to Italy in May.

Roberto Mancini is ready to try again to sign Robin van Persie, but this time for Inter Milan.

Mancini failed to sign the striker in 2012 when he was coach of Manchester City – his move to Manchester United was seen as one of the main contributing factors to United’s title success that season and the Dutchman was on fire.

But he hasn’t sparked at all this season and we aren’t surprised at the rumours. That said, we are just a dozen games into a new season with a United team who are still getting to know each other. Things can change very quickly yin football.

Let’s see RvP at his best for the club. Manchester United fans: has he reached his sell by date?
