Amazing talent

Many onlookers suspect that Louis van Gaal is looking for an experienced defensive signing in the January transfer window to complement all the youthful intent in his back line at Manchester United.

But when pure class becomes available then youthfulness can be an added bonus as it means a potentially long period of service. Luke Shaw is a case in point. And rumours persist that Manchester United are preparing a bid for a superb colt:

Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to land Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte in the January transfer window.

United are understood to have made enquiries about Laporte through an intermediary, with a view to securing a January deal to help solve their defensive woes.

We feel that the French defender is in that top category of player. Manchester United let his brilliant compatriot, Raphael Varane, slip through their fingers and they shouldn’t make the same mistake with a player who could be Varane’s international partner for a decade.

Having played 59 times for Athletic Bilbao it’s clear to see the virtues of the player. He’s a defender first and foremost. He’s solid in the tackle and generally no nonsense.

But he can also ping a beautiful pass a la Rio Ferdinand. At 20 he’s already got a great physique and wouldn’t be physically overawed in The Premier League.

Buying an experienced defender may be the safe bet but this would be a far better long-term investment and give the fans the added attraction of seeing the player improve week on week at Manchester United.

Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: youth or experience?
