Vital cog

After just 13 minutes of the game against Sunderland at the weekend Gareth Barry took a heavy blow to the ankle from the studs of Jordi Gomez and some feared the worst when the stretcher came on.

But latest reports suggest that the midfield pass master hasn’t broken anything. His scan showed damage to ankle ligaments but the prognosis is that he’ll be available in ‘weeks rather than months’ according to The Mirror.

He was immediately taken to hospital in north east for X-rays, with fears he had broken his leg although they have since been allayed.

Everton are strong in midfield but Barry has exceeded even the most optimistic projections for his Toffees career. He’s been part of Everton’s best displays since his arrival and, along with his superb passing, he has also offered a surprising amount of bite to the midfield despite his age – he’ll be 34 in February.

Everton begin a hectic period of Premier League action after the international break with games at home to West Ham on November 22 before trips to Wolfsburg and Tottenham the following week.
