That Manchester United’s XI is so hard to predict for the big one against Chelsea tells you two things: Manchester United don’t yet have a settled side. And Manchester United do have great options.
When you factor in injuries the mind boggles as to how LvG will start. But we think that the back 5 IS now starting to have a settled look – until the transfer window opens at least.
We think that De Gea, Shaw, Rojo, Jones and Rafael is the best combination in defence for United and we expect them all to start on Sunday.
In front of them Blind will definitely play. And if Van Gaal wants to be bold in this one then he can fill the other 5 places with creative players.
The diamond, with Blind at the base, Di Maria left, Herrera right and Mata top offers technique, guile and great passing range. The obvious starters up top would have to be Falcao and RvP.
The worry would be that Blind, alone, would be outnumbered in the battle for midfield. But Herrera can come deep when necessary to help out. If Manchester United can keep Chelsea on the back foot with that attack then it won’t matter.
So here is the team with emphasis on attack in this home fixture. If Valencia was fit we would consider playing him instead of Herrera, who needs to improve.
