After all the talk about Louis van Gaal being a vastly superior coach to David Moyes a game like this can be a realistic indicator of whether the club has indeed progressed after the horror show of last season.
The new team is still bedding in of course but last season, after 2 momentum gaining wins, this is the sort of game in which Manchester United would come unstuck, just when it looked as if they were about to join the leading pack.
When you consider that Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal provide three of Manchester United’s next four opponents then it’s even more important that Manchester United get three points against a West Brom side with solidity at the back and pace in attack.
If Manchester United can put a 90 minute performance together expect a win. But they have been too patchy this season and it’s difficult to remember a game in which they have performed well throughout.
