Various reports over the last few days have suggested that Manchester United may have three names in mind for their mini splurge in January.
One is Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna, who we have already spoken about this week. The second is a midfielder from the same club who drew daily newspaper attention through the summer as a major Manchester United target.
In the hope of continued sanity for our readers we are refusing to mention him again for the time being. Although United still look light in midfield and although he’s playing well in Serie A, we are still too bored by the story to drag it back up.
Another name that has been thrown up over the last day is another team mate of another major target for Manchester United over the summer. The Guardian reports:
Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic….could also be on his way to the small green part of Cheshire that is temporarily oranje, now that United seem to have given up their pursuit of his team-mate Mats Hummels.
Subotic is a real journeyman who, mainly for reasons of civil unrest in his homeland, moved to America as a kid. He eventually made his way to Germany where he joined Mainz in 2006. After two solid years there he was picked uo by the big boys Borussia Dortmund. He’s been playing there ever since, becoming a central defensive stalwart and scoring 13 in 162 league appearances.
He’s still only 25 and while he doesn’t have the quality of distribution of his partner Mats Hummels he’s been part of one of the most successful defences in Europe for 6 years. If BVB agreed to sell Manchester United would surely be improving their defence in one fell swoop. At a towering 6ft 3in he would at least give United more presence and aerial power back there.
Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: keen?
