Manchester United: Vermaelen gone, far better player lined up – report

So Manchester United have lost out to Barcelona with the signing of Thomas Vermaelen. It may seem like sour grapes from a fan perspective, but many that we have spoken to weren’t that keen on taking the player anyway.

Vermaelen has been on the bench for the last year and regularly injured for the 3 years prior to that. So he’s not only a second choice player for a rival but also a constant injury worry.

With 3 centre backs required for most games next season Manchester United will need somebody that they can rely on every week and this guy doesn’t necessarily seem like the right solution.

Of course, what he did have going in his favour was that he was a natural left footer, the like of which Manchester United don’t currently have in the centre back positions.

Which is perhaps why Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to Daley Blind of Ajax. He may not be the specialist centre back that Louis van Gaal was looking for but he is certainly a better player than Vermaelen. The Dutch player of the year, at 24 years of age, he’s the sort of signing that United fans love – a player of immense talent who can reach his potential at the club.

He can play at left wing back, left wing, centre back or in the midfield so there is very little not to like about this chap. Add to that one of the best left feet in Europe and you have a wonderful player on your hands.

The Daily Express reckons:

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Louis van Gaal will turn to Dutch international Daley Blind after effectively being blocked by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in an attempt to land Barcelona-bound Thomas Vermaelen.

We think that, along with Cuadrado and Vidal, Louis van Gaal should prioritise this signing. Let’s see him in action.
