Manchester United are likely to be one of the busier clubs in the transfer market between now and September. And Louis van Gaal has stoked the fires of speculation over the last 24 hours by specifically referring to a player long seen as a Manchester United target.
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Mail, Van Gaal says:
‘Now we have five No 9s and four No 10s and we don’t have wingers to play attacking width, not at the highest level, of Ronaldo or Di Maria or something like that. So I have to play also in another way and you have seen that.
The fact that he has name checked Di Maria as a player of the highest level at least tells us that LvG really rates the South American, nicknamed ‘The Noodle‘ for his slight frame. So, with the board seemingly desperate to spend, will Louis make a move?
A bid of £55m has been mooted over the weekend and perhaps the Manchester United manager is subtly wooing him to Old Traffrod. We know that he is open to a move after reportedly nearly signing for PSG earlier this week. Real Madrid will seriously struggle to give him proper game time unless one of Ronaldo, Rodriguez, Bale or Benzema gets injured. And if Falcao shows up at Madrid, The Argentine’s game time will be further reduced.
soccersweep believes that it’s an awful lot of money to pay for someone who has wonderful talent but can be Nani-esque in his level consistency. That said, he had a wonderful season at Real Madrid last campaign, and a decent World Cup. And Louis’s latest words suggest that a deal might be in the offing.
Let’s see what Di Maria can do at his flowing best. Manchester United fans: a perfect addition?

This really is insulting; it takes a childish leap of imagination and naiveté to draw that conclusion from Van Gaal’s comments; Van Gaal mentioned two wingers but I guess it doesn’t suit your agenda to link United with a bid for Ronaldo at the moment; even though, of the two, with his love of the club and at his age, there is enough cause for media speculation to link him with a potential return to the club.
Here is the interview;
‘You cannot compare how the players will do under the guidance of Moyes with those same players under the guidance of Louis van Gaal.
‘Every trainer and coach and manager wants a different style of play and different tactics.
‘Now we have five No 9s and four No 10s and we don’t have wingers to play attacking width, not at the highest level, of Ronaldo or Di Maria or something like that. So I have to play also in another way and you have seen that.
‘It’s a strategy of Manchester United to buy players who are on the way up and getting better, but I only buy when I think we need to.’
So, Di Maria, who is at his peak performance wise and with his age profile is at his most expensive, doesn’t fall into Van Gaal’s criteria for signing…neither does Ronaldo… Cuadrado and Depay do! I wouldn’t be surprised to see Zaha stay and fight for a first team place given Van Gaal’s preference for promoting young and upcoming players.
