Manchester United now odds on favourites to sign Premier League powerhouse

The pursuit of Arturo Vidal from Juventus is becoming painfully protracted at this point. And there are less guarantees now than there were a month ago about him actually signing for the Manchester United.

The central problem appears to be the long-term fitness of the player with concerns about the knee problems that he had towards the end of last season.

But, even though Darren Fletcher had a really good pre-season in America, it’s almost inconceivable that Manchester United will go into the new season without purchasing at least one more central midfielder.

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman could well be seen as the long-term solution for Manchester United but he won’t be available at least until after Christmas.

With Michael Carrick also unavailable for a similar amount of time we expect United to make a signing sooner rather than later.

One player who has been linked to Manchester United of late is the Everton youngster James McCarthy. He has since moved to assure fans that he is happy at his current club. But that hasn’t stopped the bookies shortening his odds on a transfer to United before September.

When last we spoke about the player he was 5/2 to join United in this window. But over the last week United have become odds on, with SkyBet, to bring him to Old Trafford if he does move in this window, at 1/3.

He is a very interesting prospect. We think he’s quite similar in style to Roy Keane but the big question is whether he has the technique to succeed at the very top level.

But at 23 he has time on his side and is already a fierce competitor with great mobility and someone who never stops working.

Let’s see some highlights. United fans: a decent addition?
