Mauricio Pochettino has got down to business after a fairly long period of assessing the pros and cons of his squad this summer.
And it appears that he is sticking with the football notion of building from the back. Recent reports have suggested that, after signing Michel Vorm and Ben Davies, Tottenham are now looking at a centre back of huge promise.
The Daily Mirror stated late Friday night:
Tottenham in talks with Villarreal’s £21million-rated Argentine defender Mateo Musacchio
The centre-back has previously been linked with Barcelona, but Spurs appear to have moved ahead in the race for his signature
The 23 year old has played twice for Argentine since his debut in 2011. He left River Plate, in his homeland, in 2009 to move to Villareal in Spain. After a year in the B team he graduated to the senior side, where he has become a regular feature of the team, playing 139 league games.
When you look at Tottenham’s squad it does make sense that the new boss is being linked to defenders. Whilst the club needs to sign another striker, they have far more quality in the forward areas than they do at the back.
Players like Townsend, Lamela, Eriksen, Lennon, Dembele, Chadi and Soldado are top-level footballers and with an even more solid foundation behind them they can win silverware this season. There is no lack of creativity in the side but you could argue that the defence could be improved.
The signing of Ben Davies will hopefully address one long term issue and a young, dominant centre back, would also help Tottenham greatly.
Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Tottenham fans: worth the cash?
