Now this is more like it. After a quiet start to his tenure as Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino seems to be closing in on a couple of really top targets.
With a stronger spine perhaps needed at the club The Express, among others, reports that Tottenham chief Franco Baldini has flown to Italy to hold talks over two players who can make a big difference to the side.
The Express reports:
FRANCO BALDINI has flown into Italy to hold talks with Roma over a double deal for Mattia Destro and Chelsea and Manchester City target Mehdi Benatia.
Benatia is a Morroccan international with 31 caps. The 27 year old seems like something of a late developer but his career exploded into life when he joined Udinese from Clermont in France in 2010. After 3 years and 72 league games he moved to big guns Roma, where his career has further blossomed. He’s scored 5 goals in 30 league games for the Rome club and drawn the interest of Europe’s elite.
As for Destro, we think that this could be a genuinely exciting signing. Tottenham don’t really have a killer number 9 at the moment and this guy could be the answer. At 23 he’s scored 19 in 41 games for Roma since joining the club in 2012.
He’s a super target man with great strength and an even better first touch. He would add guile and grit to a Tottenham front line which, at times, looks a bit lightweight.
Let’s see Destro in action. Tottenham fans: would these two immediately improve the first team?

Yes I’d love Us to get Benatia but can’t see it happening!!! And I’ve just seen Destro highlight reel and he just looks like a poacher. Soldado reel is much more impressive so who’s to say Destro will come In and settle??
We need proven EPL talent to go with what we’ve got.
Vorm
Davies
Richards replace Naughton
Vlaar replace Dawson
Schneiderline replace Capoue
Bony replace Adebayor
Benatia
Destro
Griezmann
Equals the best chance we’ve got of breaking the top 4.
4/2/3/1
Lloris
Walker
Benatia
Vertonghen
Davies
Sandro/ Schneiderline
Holtby
Lamela
Eriksen
Griezmann
Bony/Soldado
On paper that looks the best team we’ve had since Parker, Modric, Rafa, Bale,Lennon, Ade. So if Poch can get the best out of them I think we’ve got half a chance. Even if u look at the more realistic team we will put out we’ve still got a chance if he works his magic.
Lloris
Walker
Vlaar/Richards
Vertonghen
Davies
Sandro/Schneiderline
Holtby
Lamela
Eriksen
Townsend/Cebellos
Bony/Soldado
I’ve got a feeling if we keep Soldado he will show us why he was banging in goals for fun in La Liga. Just needs his confidence back!!!

Tottenham need a Couple for Good defender and a Striker who can get arnd 20 plus goals….
Dawson should be sold but Vlad can be given another chance to prove this season, he was poor and good in few games n got injured later…so not a good thought to sell him…
Lascelles and Vlaar should come in.
Vlaar should be straight swap with Dawson and Naughton plus some cash…
Spurs can go for Micah Richards who wants playin time can tottenham can give tht and some competition to Walker….Given Richards can play as RB and CB he would be good back up if Spurs end up getting only one defender….
They should get a striker since they hav only 2 recognised strikers in their ranks…
Lloris/ Vorm
Walker/ Richards
Vlaar/ Kaboul
Vertonghen/ Chiriches (if he stays or a new defender)
Davies/ Rose
Lamela/ Lennon
Sandro/ Capoue/ Bentaleb
Dembele/ Holtby/ Paulinho
Townsend/ Chadli
Eriksen
Soldado/ Adebayor/ New Striker
