Reports today suggest that Luis van Gaal aims to cut the Manchester United squad, in terms of numbers, before next season.
With no participation in the European competitions his season Manchester United will play far fewer than 60 games even if they get to the final of both the cup competitions.
So it could be a case of getting rid of a lot of dead wood and just making two or three really good additions this summer.
There are obvious areas of the squad that need improvement. You can fully expect a centre back and another central midfielder to come in to Manchester United this summer.
But the Manchester United manager may also look to add a bit of fairy dust to the squad – another player who can make a difference in the tightest of games.
Manchester United have got some great finishers but they don’t have too many really top quality creatives out wide.
One player that we think Manchester United should certainly go for is Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund.
There’s been speculation, for a good few months, that he may be moving on this summer but injury curtailed his World Cup and put any move on the back burner.
But he will be fit for the new season and it looks as if he’s going to be one of the best players in Europe over the next couple of years.
He’s got incredible poise and balance, can play beautifully with both feet, and is incredibly quick at covering the ground.
When you add goals to his brilliant distribution skills – a remarkable 88 in 244 career games – you have an all-round magnificent footballer.
A huge figure if around £45 million has been mooted for the player but, even at that price, we think he would represent value for money at just 25 years of age.
Dortmund are, of course, a fantastic team themselves but they do seem to have problems keeping their best players when the big guns are circling. We can’t imagine it will be too long before a big bid is put in for this guy because he could become one of the very top players in the world.
If Manchester United only make one more purchase this summer we think they would be well advised to buy this guy.
It would be the Hollywood signing that Manchester United have craved for the last couple of years.
Let’s see the brilliant ‘Woody‘ in action. Manchester United fans: worth the cash?
