Manchester United: The most sensible signing of the summer?

Worth a punt?

Manchester United are most probably going to sign a centre back this summer and we think that Eliaquim Mangala would be a fantastic choice. Like the Rio Ferdinand deal in 2002 he would cost a lot of money but give you 10 years of service at the very top level – which would largely offset any transfer fee. Mangala could be the next Vincent Kompany with his power, pace and leadership abilities.

Strangely, recent reports have suggested that Louis van Gaal is not interested in signing the player as he feels he’s too inexperienced for the club’s requirements.

We hope for the sake of Manchester United fans that there is no substance in this rumour but, with a fairly young crop of centre-halfs at United, LvG may well opt for experience at the back this summer.

So what about the idea of taking Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal?

We have spoken about Manchester United signing this guy of late and it appears that it could be on.The Star said yesterday:

MANCHESTER UNITED have been backed to beat Fiorentina to the signing of Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen.

The Arsenal player is cleary not going to be happy sitting on the bench forever at his current club and could well be looking for a move this summer.

He may not be the Hollywood style marquee signing that Manchester United fans crave. But he is certainly a solid and consistent performer who knows The Premier League inside out.

He’s got decent pace, two good feet and is a serious goal threat from set pieces. We think that, with so many other areas needing reinforcements that this could turn out to be a canny investment.

Let’s see some of hid highlights. Manchester United fans: keen?
