Manchester United: A perfect midfield addition?

Good idea?

Lots of changes are afoot at Barcelona this summer after they failed to win a trophy for the first time in a while.

Alexis Sanchez is one who may leave the club this summer and talksport says that Barcelona have also decided to offload Alex Song:

Barcelona have asked the representative of Alex Song to find a new club for the former Arsenal midfielder as he is not in new manager Luis Enrique’s plans for next season.

Manchester United have been linked with the midfielder in recent months, as have several Italian clubs, including Napoli and Inter Milan.

The former Arsenal man has been a peripheral figure since joining the Spanish club a couple of years ago and Manchester United have in the past been linked to the player.

If Manchester United are going to dominate again they will need to get at least a couple more midfielders – probably even three – one creative, one defensive and a third who can do a bit of everything and take the weight off the main two. As sort of Nicky Butt type if you will.

Song may not immediately spring to mind as the answer to Manchester United’s problems but, at a cost of perhaps around £8-10 million, with a good few years left in the legs (he’s 26), he could turn out to be a supper addition.

What Song does have is great mobility and intelligence on the ball. He may not be the biggest personality and isn’t necessarily able to dominate games. But Manchester United needs strength in depth in a midfield department which is increasingly struggling for numbers.

Manchester United’s only real top central midfielder is Michael Carrick and he will be 33 soon.

Let’s take a look at some of Song’s best moments. Manchester United fans: would he represent good value? A canny investment?
