Manchester United: Shock move on?

Unlikely

The Telegraph calls it the ‘long shot’ of the day and we would have to concur.

Manchester United obviously need a new left back with Patrice ever coming to the end of his career and nobody obvious coming through the ranks to take his place.

You would have to have been in a cave for the last six months not to know that Manchester United are tracking Luke Shaw of Southampton.

Most Manchester United fans hope that this deal gets done sooner rather than later. But the new manager is apparently planning contingency in case the deal doesn’t come off.

The Telegraph says:

• Long shot of the day: Louis van Gaal is lining up a move for Barcelona left back Jordi Alba in case the transfer of Luke Shaw from Southampton falls through. (Express)

Quite why Jordi Alba would want to leave Barcelona after such a fine start to his career there is anyone’s guess. He’s a Spanish lad playing at the best Spanish club, for our money, so it’s extremely unlikely that he would want to leave for Manchester United.

We don’t think he’s as good as Shaw either so even if it were to happen it could be viewed with slight disappointment for the fans.

Manchester United simply need to get that Luke Shaw deal done – put it to bed then concentrate on other major targets for the summer.

That’s not to say Alba isn’t also an exceptional player. He’s another marauding left back who loves to get forward as much as he likes to defend.

Let’s see the lad in action. Manchester United fans: keen?
