Which players will Pochettino bring with him to Tottenham?

What a signing

We thought AVB was a terrible appointment. We weren’t that hot on Tim Sherwood. But we have been banging on for months about Tottenham bringing Mauricio Pochettino to the club.

Anyone who thinks that he doesn’t have the requisite experience is too old fashioned to be selecting managers anyway. Because this man has proven his pedigree in The Premier League and sets his teams up in a sensational total football manner which will delight the Tottenham fans. His style is vibrant and refreshing. He has all the hunger and ambition of a young man and that’s exactly what is required in an ever more intense football industry.

Forget the fact that his English is a bit patchy. Communication clearly wasn’t a problem at Southampton. Lest we forget, he was appointed amidst serious controversy as fan favourite Nigel Adkins was bluntly given his marching orders despite bringing Premier League footy back to St.Mary’s.

But Pochettino has done a quite magnificent job and Tottenham fans should not spend a moment worrying about whether he’s good enough. They should be more concerned with how long they can hold on to him. A good year or two at Spurs and he will surely be courted by other big clubs.

That aside, will he bring anyone with him from is old club? Tottenham could do with another left-back so is it out of the question that Luke Shaw might be persuaded to join? The lad need only look at Gareth Bale’s career to see that the sky is the limit for a Tottenham player.

If that’s a bit ambitious then perhaps a bid for Adam Lallana, Callum Chambers, Dejan Lovren or Jay Rodriguez. Of the four you’d have to say the latter two would be most suitable. Chambers is a frighteningly good young right-back but Tottenham have decent cover in that area.

And while Lallana is a lovely player we feel that he may not have the pace to be a conventional winger at the very top. He’s more likely to want an attacking midfield, or number ten spot or roving role behind the striker(s). And Tottenham already have Christian Eriksen firing on all cylinders in that area of the park. We aren’t saying that they can’t play together but, at a mooted £20-30m, it might not be the best way to spend the budget.
But don’t rule it out entirely. Pochettino is clearly a big fan.

So if Tottenham are to bring in Saints players perhaps they will look to the impressive Dejan Lovren – who, at 24, looks a top quality centre back and may be the perfect addition if Jan Vertonghen were to be tempted by a move – or the unfortunate Jay Rodriguez who had a super season only to get injured after playing himself into contention for a place on the plane to Rio.

Tottenham need more quality up front and Rodriguez may ultimately be deemed to fit the bill.

By the way Schneiderlin is not a centre back.

By the way, Pochettino was sacked by Espanyol after his second season in charge. Espanyol were bottom of the Spanish League. Mauricio has not quite finished 2 season so far in the Premier League. !!!!!!!.

Not sure what Saints games you’ve watched in the past but Morgan Schneiderlin is not a centre back.

Good point! The writer meant Dejan Lovren. Thanks for pointing that out

Mark my words, on the back of the rather acrimonious departure of MoPo from Saints this afternoon, not one single player will be sold to Spurs this summer. If our best players do leave, they deserve better than Spurs.

..and Saints certainly deserve better. Just like Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid, however, successful teams on smaller budgets get broken up (or ‘will get broken up’ future tense in the case of Atletico) by the cruel economics of the modern game. Very sad but very true. Such a shame that money is now god in the game

I hope Southampton don’t lose any of their best players but lets face it Sam, if they are good enough to play for England they deserve better than Southampton.
