Manchester United’s Strongest XI vs City

Best team for the big one

Two wins in a week is not only unusual for Manchester United this season but highly timely.

Just as it appeared that the season would end in March David Moyes finally rallied the troops and got a good response from his players in midweek.

The confidence gained in Europe seems to have rubbed off on the squad as they gave their most fluid performance of the campaign against West Ham – incidentally, Manchester United now have more away league points (30) than any other Premier League team this season.

So Manchester United fans will hope that the team is coming into form at exactly the right time with Manchester City on Tuesday and Bayern Munich in 10 days.

But the season has been marked by a few steps forward followed by a few back. Inconsistency has been such that we have no idea which Manchester United will really turn up on Tuesday.

But, if the weekend taught us anything it’s that Kagawa, Mata and Rooney look great together. The uunderuse of Kagawa has been criminal this season. With him in the team the whole unit looks more slick – he simply has to play on Tuesday.

Danny Welbeck was rested at the weekend and we think he will be back on Tuesday. He’s a big game player who offers a real physical threat to the opposition. So, shoe-horning all four in will be tough but Moyes has to do it if he wants to win the game. We think that he should play a 4-2-3-1 with Welbeck on the left of the three and Mata in behind Rooney.

The defence pretty much picks itself with so many centre backs out. But we think that Manchester United’s best two are fit – Jones and Ferdinand are a great combination.

So here is how we would like Manchester United to line up in the massive game on Tuesday which Manchester City need to win if they are to stay firmly in the title hunt.

Manchester United: (4-2-3-1) De Gea, Evra, Jones, Ferdinand, Rafa – Carrick, Fellaini – Welbeck, Mata, Kagawa – Rooney
