What about Danny Welbeck then? Undroppable or what? When we first saw him in the first team as a teenager he scored a sensational goal in The Carling Cup – a really difficult to execute inswinger from the edge of the area.
But, as his career has developed, it has become apparent that finishing isn’t his strongest suit. If it was then we would surely be talking about a talisman for club and country.
Because he already has so many great qualities – he’s quick (when he gets into that long stride), tenacious, hard-working, powerful and has a flair for the unpredictable. He added dynamism to the whole side against Olympiakos and he will surely be a mainstay on that left hand side for the reminder of the season.
Having not played too many games in this campaign he will be pretty fresh so expect him to get a lot of game time between now and May. After his midweek performance he definitely merits a start against West Ham.
That aside, why oh why can’t David Moyes think outside the box and put Juan Mata in as an attacking midfielder next to Micheal Carrick? It makes so much sense. The middle of the park needs his speed and range of passing, his mercurial touch and his creativity. Mata isn’t involved enough from wide areas and he could do what Giggs did for Manchester United on Wednesday from the centre of midfield. Moyes should at least give it a try against West Ham.
That said, ironically RvP is out at the weekend so Moyes may opt to put Mata in at his preferred number 10 and push Wazza forward into the number 9 position for this game.
If fit, Chris Smalling should come in for Rio, who should be wrapped in cotton wool for the big games. But the youngster’s hamstring could hamper his ability to take part in this one.
Other than that it’s as you were for Manchester United. Valencia is another who deserves another start if his eye recovers sufficiently.
So here is our version of the strongest team to face West Ham on Saturday with Welbeck remaining on the left where he seems so comfortable, Januzaj at number 10 and Mata alongside Carrick. (KO 1730 GMT). Discuss….
Manchester United: De Gea, Evra, Rio, Jones, Rafa – Welbeck, Carrick, Mata, Valencia, Januzaj, Rooney
