The window has exploded for Manchester United over the last day or so with news that the club is interested in taking Chelsea’s superstar Juan Mata to Old Trafford for between £35-40m. In today’s market we think that he is worth every penny – he would make a huge difference at Manchester United and give them that extra bit of class and creativity that they so desperately require.

But don’t think that the spending will stop there. David Moyes is being given the keys to the Manchester United kitty and, be it in January or July, we are likely to see unprecedented levels of spending from the club, in an attempt to get back to the top of the pile.

Another link which has surfaced over the last couple of days pertains to Bayern München centre back Dante. He has been very forthright in talking about Manchester United’s interest in him. We have to say that this could seem, to some, a little bit like a ploy to negotiate better terms for himself at his current club.

But he told reporters yesterday:

“I’m thankful for the Manchester United interest, it will all be sorted out by the end of the month,” he said.

Whatever the motive for the quotes a market has been opened up on the player with SkyBet and they have installed Manchester United as clear favourites to sign him if he does leave Bayern in January.

SkyBet have Manchester United at 5/4 for his signature, with PSG second favourites, way back at 12/1.

For the record we think that Manchester United’s current crop of centre backs is much better than Dante. Whenever we have seen him ont’ telly he’s dropped a huge clanger in a high profile game – seriously we can’t believe how many times we have seen the guy lose the ball in bad positions. His ball control also leaves a lot to be desired but all these weaknesses in his game appear to be brushed under the carpet because he’s a threat from set pieces.

Overall we think that signing Dante would be a waste of money.
