We all accepted that this one was virtually done. But Benfica have announced on their website that the deal between themselves and Chelsea for midfielder Nemanja Matic is now official.
The website reported a short time ago:
The Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD, in compliance with Article 248 of the Portuguese Securities Code, announces that it has agreed with Chelsea Football Club Limited for the sale outright economic and sporting rights athlete Nemanja Matic, the amount of € 25,000,000 (euro twenty five million).
The 25 year old will re-join Chelsea three years after he left for what would become a sparkling stint at Benfica, for whom he turned out over 50 times, scoring 6 goals in the process.
His career at international level has been more stunted with only 9 caps for his country since his debut for Serbia in 2008 – but his new found status and form can only help his quest for further international honours.
The Chelsea website says of the deal:
Chelsea Football Club have today completed the signing of Nemanja Matic from Benfica.
On signing his five-and-a-half-year contract, the 25-year-old said: ‘I am very happy for this opportunity to be back at this club. I feel very good because of that and just want to say I will give my best to help the team and make the Chelsea fans happy.’
His signing will add competition to a midfield which contains several high profile veterans. Jose Mourinho will hope that the presence of Matic will add some energy to the engine room.
