You know that as football fans you all have players who you personally think are underrated. Players who you rate more highly than others. Your friends and the wider public may not agree but you stick to your guns because it marks you out as a football man who has your own strong opinions about the game.

One such player who has always been in my ‘underrated’ category is Kenwyne Jones. He’s a really big lad but also has a great first touch. He’s decent with both feet, great in the air and reads the game well.

We think that, in the right team, he could be a highly effective player. He hasn’t played for Stoke as much as he would have liked and, after a recent spat with Mark Hughes, it appears that he could be moving to Everton for an absolute song.

The Guardian says of the potential deal:

Everton are interested in signing Kenwyne Jones from Stoke City and are trying to complete a deal for the striker for as little as £1m. The 29-year-old has less than six months left on his contract and Stoke would welcome the chance to move him on but the Midlands club are holding out for closer to £3m.

You may think we are nuts but, with Romelu Lukaku likely to leave at the end of the season, we think that Jones could be a ready made replacement. Yes, further forays into he market will be needed for more forwards, if The Belgian does leave.
But we think Jones will exceed all expectations if he does move to Everton.

He may not have quite the same pace as Lukaku but he’s similar in many other ways. Jones has great attributes as a Premier League footballer and if Roberto Martinez can coach the best out of the player Everton fans will have a brilliant new signing at Goodison.

He’s lazy and as for two good feet he couldn’t trap a bag of cement. Taxi for Jones! In fact im prepared to drive him to get the deal done quicker as he probably can’t be bothered to do it himself. goaaarn stoke git rid

Whilst I think Jones is garbage and shudder at the thought of this, the writer may actually have a point. We idolised Big Dunc, but with respect his record was shocking!

Harry Redknapps comments on Jones from his Southampton time are legendary….laid back to the point of semi-consciousness being the general idea. Ordinarily you would think ‘what the hell are we doing looking at this lad’ he’s the complete opposite to a Martinez-type player. There is a ‘but’ though. This is Dennis Lawrence…a former Trinidad international who is now a development coach at Everton and is a Martinez appointee. Presumably if anyone knows how to push Kenwynnes buttons and get him delivering it will be Dennis Lawrence…Jones will only be a squad striker of course but if we can sell a £6.5mn squad striker and replace him for a £1mn one and not lose a lot by it its not bad business!.

I remember him coming to Goodison when he was playing for Sunderland. He was so bad that both sets of fans were ridiculing him !!! Can’t believe it if this is true.

I recall that game. Liverpool were linked with him at that time….he was so poor that the chant of “Rafa, Rafa sign him up!” went around Goodison. Thanks, but no thanks! We should be looking to improve on what we have not just making up numbers.

Sounds like another Kone! That was a waste of money! Both of them put together arent even 10 goals a season! 😛 We need to go after younger players. Velios is probably better that Jones! 🙁
