Deal Agreed: But wise for Tottenham?

Wise move for Tottenham?

Why do permanent marker pens smell so good? Why do people still watch Eastenders? ‘allo ma’.  And why does Jermain Defoe not get more plaudits at Tottenham?

He’s smashed in the goals wherever he’s been, including a highly competitive 19 in 55 for the England national side. Yet, despite Tottenham struggling to score this season, Roberto Soldado has retained his place as the premier striker at Tottenham.

There may be weaknesses in the player’s game. His hold up play, for example, may leave something to be desired. But, at 31, he remains a potent and precise finisher. 9 goals in 20 games this season, without even getting prolonged, run in the side really says it all.

Yet Tim Sherwood is allowing the player to leave the club. The BBC reported:

Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe has agreed to join Major League Soccer side Toronto FC for £6m.

Sherwood told reporters:

“This is a great opportunity and one that Jermain wishes to pursue.”

Emanuel Adebayor is playing out of his skin at the moment and Roberto Soldado will surely improve his goals to games ratio. But, with at least a year left in the legs at the top level, you’d imagine that Sherwood has another player lined up if he’s allowing such a consistent scorer to leave.

We that that it may prove to be a poor decision. With Tottenham hopeful of getting into one of those Champions League positions by the end of the season they will need all the firepower that they can muster and letting Defoe go at this stage could come back to bite them.

Defoe’s Tottenham career has generated endless debate from fans of the club and if he has a blinding month before his departure those arguments could continue for some time yet.

Tottenham fans – is it wise to let Defoe go at this stage of the season? Let’s remind ourselves of the goalscoring precision of the man.

His wage is probably way too high for the amount of games he plays, £6million for a 31 year old?

      Can’t turn that down.

Great servant to the club and he won’t be forgotten. Best of luck in the future JD.

Jermaine on fire a few years ago was a sight to behold.
But £6m fee and up to £90k a week contract for a striker with 12 games no goals in league this season to good to turn down. 32yrs old this year, pace his major asset dwindling and in no way a link man.
All Spurs fans will remember him in pomp but time to move, good luck Jermaine.
