Moyes wasn’t just in Spain to see Koke

Many have seen the picture of David Moyes in El Vicente Calderon stadium in Spain on Wednesday night to watch Atletico Madrid take on Porto in The Champions League.

The first assumption was that he was there to scout Madrid’s brilliant young midfielder Koke. Manchester United are desperate for midfield reinforcements after a poor start to their domestic campaign and many believe that Koke is at the top of the shopping list.

But, with the Spanish team still in The Champions League and enjoying their best league form in years, there is no reason to suggest that the player would want to leave his current surroundings. With a World Cup place in the Spain squad up for grabs (Koke has played 7 times for his country) you might imagine that Koke would put all thoughts of joining Manchester United on ice until the end of the summer at least.

But Manchester United have also been struggling defensively this season and The Mirror reports that the purpose of Moyes’ trip was also to see Porto centre back Eliaquim Mangala. The 22 year old France international is one of the hottest properties in Europe right now with Chelsea among his reported admirers.

The Mirror says:

Manchester United boss David Moyes has put Porto’s formidable Frenchman Eliaquim Mangala on his Christmas wish-list.

Moyes watched the powerful centre-half in action on Wednesday as the Portuguese giants crashed out of the Champions League against Atletico Madrid – and is in the hunt for his £15 million signature.

Its going to take a big bid to prise such an asset from the club but Porto are known to be a selling club, at the right price. So if Moyes acts decisively he may well steal a march on Chelsea et al.

We believe that Manchester United have 7 ‘untouchables’ – players who will lead the team into the next golden generation. To complete this tram they need a left back, centre back, central midfielder and a winger. Perhaps Mangala will be the first solution.

In January may buy these players Leighton Baines, Ross Barkley, Eliquim Mangala and Everton Ribeiro.
