We believe that Chelsea should be looking to strengthen upfront if they spend any money in January.
Marco Van Ginkel has sustained a serious injury and players like Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel look like they are now treading water at the club after fantastic yesteryears.
But Chelsea still have easily enough in midfield to navigate this season successfully. Nevertheless, rumours persist that they are interested in signing a young German midfielder, Max Meyer.
Reports over the last few days have suggested that the club are prepared to spend £12.5 million to bring the player to Chelsea.
The coach of Myers club Schalke has spoken about the rumours. The Express quotes him as saying:
“There has been no official offer from Chelsea.
“But I have heard about their interest.”
The player himself is flattered by the link but revealed he is hopeful that he will soon sign a new contract in Gelsenkirchen.
Meyer said: “I’m glad that I’m so popular, but I feel very comfortable here.
At just 18 years of age Meyer has broken into the first team this season playing 15 times and scoring 3 goals in the process. A natural athlete with great passing vision he looks like the sort of player at Chelsea could be interested in. However he seems like a player for the future rather than one to go straight into the Chelsea team.
So if a serious attempt is made to sign the player he would probably go straight back out on loan in order to gain more valuable first team experience.
