The January transfer window is nearly upon us and the media is saturated with speculation involving a whole host of players.  One who’s getting more column inches than most is the Colombian phenomenon Radamel Falcao. A number of reports, including an article in The Mail, have suggested that the striker is poised to join Chelsea. Owner Roman Abramovich is ostensibly prepared to pay the player a yearly salary of £10m to lure him from Atletico Madrid next month.

Chelsea fans will be hoping that these reports prove to be more than mere speculation as they will be desperate for Falcao to sign for their club.

The Blues are having a tumultuous season. They’re poorly placed in the league, already knocked out of the Champions League and fan favourite Di Matteo has been sacked.  Current incumbent Rafael Benitez is unpopular with the fans and is widely seen as a temporary solution.  However, all this could change should the rumours of Falcao’s imminent arrival be proven precise.

The 26-year-old has been in inspired form this season – as his hat-trick against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup Final in Monaco testified – and there is no doubt that his pace, power and relentless pursuit of goals will terrify defences up and down the land.  The acquisition of Falcao may well prove to be the missing piece in the jigsaw that could yet see Chelsea challenging for major silverware at the end of the season.

Though current striker Fernando Torres has 12 goals to his name this season, he still fails to unanimously convince.  The Spaniard’s weak effort in the 2nd half of the World Club Cup Final against Corinthians on Sunday was further evidence that his time spearheading the Chelsea forward line may be coming to an end.  Benitez will be hopeful that, with Falcao at the helm of the attack, terrace discontent will be replaced by chants of adulation for the man they call ‘el Tigre’.
